There's a Luther movie in production, here are all the details so far...

A Slice of London Noir

The Luther Movie should surface on Netflix soon. The five BBC TV series of Luther have been a British crime noir of the highest order. The story of DCI John Luther (Idris Elba) and his elastic attitude to the letter of the law as he deals with serial killers, deranged murderers and sadistic abusers. Elba has been awarded a Critics’ Choice Television Award, Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance in the drama.

Written by Neil Cross, who has delivered a kinetic and dark set of stories. You can feel John Luthers soul slowly being chipped away in every episode. Cross manages to create ever darker scenarios at such a pace that they reward repeat viewing.

Set in London, the city becomes a living breathing entity in which the modern horrors faced by Luther are part and parcel of the city’s blood soaked history.

The Luther movie

A movie had been mentioned and rumoured for some while, but only officially acknowledged when filming commenced in November 2021 when Elba announced he was back via his social media:

The only other thing that this confirms is that the coat is back! (Despite being chucked into the Thames at some point, maybe it’s a new one. Hard to imagine Luther popping out to the shops though).

Plot details

We know zero about the plot, no synopsis has been issued so far, beyond the fact that there is a baddie played by Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings) and Cynthia Erivo playing a rival detective. Erivo had best tread gently as Luthers colleagues rarely survive for long.

At the end of the fifth season Luther was arrested for veering too far from the letter of the law, so it will be interesting to see whether it is an immediate follow up or has less connection and is a stand alone movie.

A movie brings the possibility of a higher budget, Elba said when the film was announced “With a film, the sky is the limit. Obviously, you can be a little bit more bold in the storylines, maybe international, a little bit sort of up the scale. But John Luther is always going to be John Luther.” The film is directed by Jamie Payne, who helmed season 4 of Luther and more recently Outlander. Cinematography is by Tom Stern, ASC, AFC, a long term collaborater with Clint Eastwood on his movies – so it should look the nuts.
