Less than a months time until Wakanda Forever releases in cinemas, how will Disney handle the legacy of Chadwick Boseman and Black Panther?

Wakanda Forever has released the first set of trailers in advance of its mid November release and fans have been cautious as to how the legacy of Chadwick Boseman and T’Challa (Black Panther) would be handled. Thankfully the trailer offers us a promising and epic peek into the continued story of Wakanda and of the mantle of Black Panther. Watch the first official trailer below.

A MEMORIAL FILM OR A CASH GRAB?

It is not a new criticism to argue that the likes of Disney have not profited off acting stars no longer with us as well as the moral implications this often brings. An example would be Disney’s Star Wars movie Rogue One, which saw a CGI recast of actor Peter Cushing in his role of Grand Moff Tarkin, despite Cushing having passed away some 20 years prior.

While visually magical and technologically impressive it still rubbed a lot of people the wrong way and in that same spirit, Marvel fans were worried a similar mistake would be made with actor Chadwick Boseman who played Black Panther up until his unfortunate passing in August 2020. Thankfully the trailer seems to show no sign of any CGI replacements and instead has many references and artistic recreations settled in the backdrop of the city of Wakanda itself. The tone of the trailer is also much more somber when compared to their other Marvel properties which is a sign that the producers are hopefully taking this story and it’s characters seriously.

Wakanda Forever

A MARVEL FILM WITH PURPOSE

Disney and Marvel execs no doubt feel the pressure to get this film right above all others released this year. Boseman was universally loved by fans and critics alike not only due to bringing us the first live action Black Panther but also his charming and likeable personality off-screen. He was a man that clearly had a lot of passion for the character of T’Challa and he knew the incredible influence his portrayal had on the world. Aside from a series of R rated Blade movies back in the late 90’s there had been little to no adaptations of black superheroes in movies. Black Panther was the first mainstream superhero movie to feature a leading black actor in 14 years.

It was a progressive achievement and a statement that made its mark on the MCU and impacted the lives of so many. Wakanda Forever must drive home this achievement and the achievements of the late actor, not to profit off a man’s death but to honour the legacy which he leaves behind. The joy and the thrill and the passion that united so many with his character can unite us again in mourning and in celebration of his memory.

Wakanda Forever

A STORY ABOUT UNITY

While the overarching story will no doubt be your classic Marvel showdown of hero versus villain, this film has the potential to be represent so much more. From the trailer we can see Namor will finally make his MCU appearance and may possibly be the films initial antagonist, though it is popular belief he will side with the Wakandan people in the end to fight against a greater threat. Namor being an Atlantean, it can be imagined his initial interactions with the great land kingdom of Wakanda will be hostile, yet that idea of unity and coming together is something of great importance expressed through Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal of Black Panther.

The Atlanteans and the Wakandans may put aside their grievances and their prejudices in order to protect the world. Sacrifice, duty, honour, love. This is a Marvel movie yes but one that has the power to be something else entirely. We as the fans can only hope that this power is used responsibly, to honour the memory of a fallen hero, both on screen and off.

Wakanda Forever is set for release on November 11th 2022.
