The Penguin TV series being developed by HBO has teased an in-production trailer to get the hype train rolling for this upcoming show.

The Penguin TV Series has just received its first teaser trailer courtesy of HBO Max and gives a small glimpse into their upcoming project scheduled to release next year. We’ve picked out a few interesting highlights from the trailer as well as our own theories for what may unfold on the small screen. Check out the full trailer below.

THE PENGUIN – NEW KINGPIN OF GOTHAM

Little has been uncovered regarding this series other than it will focus on Batman villain The Penguin (played by Colin Farrell) following the events of Matt Reeves The Batman film. Gotham City at this point has been somewhat devastated by flood, leaving much of the city submerged and many of its districts isolated from direct aid. This leaves the city vulnerable to the criminal element, not to mention the impending power vacuum for control over Gotham’s underworld.

In recent comics and other media the character of The Penguin has evolved from a short fat man with a monocle and a fetish for colourful umbrellas into DC’s underdog kingpin of crime. The Gotham TV series and Rocksteady’s Arkham video games are a good example of the character’s evolution into this role, further supported by Farrell’s portrayal in The Batman.

The Penguin TV series will almost certainly focus on his rise to power and the many conflicts he’ll have with the rest of Gotham’s gangsters, though who these may be is anyones guess at this current time. The early seasons of Gotham delve into many of Batman’s mafia family enemies and even created a few of their own, The Penguin TV series may use this same formula to set up its antagonists.

THE PENGUIN TAKES ON A PROTEGE?

In the trailer we see a young man trailing after The Penguin in multiple shots with no confirmation at this time who the character may be. With The Penguin looking to take over Gotham’s criminal underworld no doubt he’ll need fresh recruits to bolster his men for the inevitable gang war to follow, however could there be more to this relationship than we’re seeing? There are not that many named henchmen of The Penguin in the comics, let alone any that match the description of the boy shown in the trailer, but there is one potential character that this could be, leading us to think he may be The Penguin’s protege in the series, taken under his wing the same way Carmine Falcone took him under his.

JASON TODD IN THE PENGUIN TV SERIES?

For those who aren’t aware, Jason Todd in DC Comics is the second person to hold the mantle of Robin, becoming Batmans sidekick after Dick Grayson, the first Robin leaves to pursue a solo superhero career. Jason’s background is that of a street orphan doing everything he can to survive in the urban landscape of Gotham. His criminal parentage led him to an early life of crime which may have continued if not for the intervention of Batman who took in the boy after he attempted to steal the wheels off The Batmobile.

Could it be possible that this boy in the trailer is actually Matt Reeve’s version of Jason Todd? Todd certainly has ties to The Penguin in the comics and at one stage even takes over as Gotham’s crime lord under the alias of Red Hood, sitting in The Penguin’s seat of power in The Iceberg Lounge. It could be a very interesting way of expanding Batman’s mythos in this extended universe Reeves is creating while also doing a very different take on an iconic characters origin story. Which leads us to the big question…

WILL THE BATMAN MAKE AN APPEARANCE?

It is unconfirmed whether Robert Pattinson will guest star as The Batman in The Penguin TV series. If he does it will most likely be as a cameo later in the first season as to not steal the limelight away from the main character. However if our theory about the boy being a different take on Robin is correct then no doubt it’s possible we’ll see Batman or Bruce Wayne interact with him at some point. It’s still very early days and our information about the series as it stands is very limited but should further footage be released prior to the series release next year we’ll be sure to cover it here on The Spiral.
