As The Mandalorian Season 3 draws to a close, who will challenge Mando one warrior to another, for only the strongest shall rule Mandalore?

The Mandalorian Season 3 is just over halfway done and it’s shaping up to be even more action packed than its predecessors much to the enjoyment of the fanbase (except episode three which we won’t talk about). After episode 5 everything seems to be going well for Mando (Din Djarin) and his people, turning from outcasts to heroes practically overnight and having a place they can finally call home. Even Mando and his long time rival Paz Vizsla seem to be on friendly terms as the latter supports the former’s plan of rescuing the citizens of Nevarro.

Despite this fortunate turn of events there is an underlying dispute that remains unchallenged, that being the ownership of The Darksaber and its symbolic relevance to the leadership of the Mandalorian people. While the saber is currently in the possession of our protagonist Din Djarin, it likely won’t be long til another attempts to claim the weapon for themselves and with it the rule of Mandalore.

BO-KATAN – RIGHTFUL HEIR OF MANDALORE?

The most obvious claimant by far, Bo-Katan Kryze is a veteran of The Clone Wars and descended from royalty, her sister once presiding over the throne during Mandalore’s time as a pacifist society. In an attempt to reestablish the old warrior ways of her people Bo-Katan worked alongside Pre Vizsla in the Mandalorian sect known as Deathwatch. After it was disbanded Bo-Katan seemingly sought to change her ways and worked with the Jedi in retaking Mandalore from Maul, the former Sith apprentice who took Mandalore for his own purposes, creating her own clan known as the Night Owls.

The Mandalorian Season 3

She is no stranger to combat or politics, with her taking a more prominent role in The Mandalorian Season 3 we can see her take the lead in almost every one of the Mandalorian operations. She has gained the respect of The Armourer who as of episode 5 has tasked her with recruiting the scattered remnants of the clans of Mandalore in the hopes of reclaiming their destroyed homeworld.

BO-KATAN TURNS TO THE DARKSIDE?

Despite her sense of honour Bo-Katan has at this point lost everything, including her home and her family, it would be no stretch to imagine her using this opportunity of newfound respect to gain control of what’s left of the Mandalorian people. Under her leadership Mandalore would return to its warrior roots and once again become a force to be reckoned with in the Galaxy.

The Mandalorian Season 3

The Jedi are no more and the New Republic has already proven to be somewhat apathetic to the fate of planets not under their protection. Mandalore could become a beacon of hope for those in the Outer Rim, or a symbol of terror for any who oppose them.

Mandalore has a history of conquest and war, a means which may be used to the ends of Bo-Katan should she wish to recreate Mandalore as a Galactic superpower. With his newfound paternal instincts for Grogu it would be hard to imagine Mando being ok with this approach to leadership, yet with his current lack of skill with the Darksaber it would be no contest. Of course Mando would likely hand over The Darksaber if he judged Bo-Katan’s intentions to be honourable yet should worse come to worse the two could be on opposite sides of a Mandalorian civil war.

THE ARMOURER – THE MASTERMIND?

Alternatively, The Mandalorian Season 3 has given us more insight into the role of The Armourer and her place amongst the clan as a sort of mentor and keeper of knowledge. But could she be vying for something more? So far she has remained a stoic, neutral onlooker to the events surrounding Mando and Grogu, always putting the clan and the tenets of their creed above all else. It’s possible however that she is playing the long game, with Bo-Katan being her secret weapon.

Could the armourer be using Bo-Katan as a means to an end, to unite the clans of Mandalore only to seize power for herself? We still have no idea who the armourer is, what family she belonged to or her real name, she could be a character of great importance that we simply aren’t aware of yet.  She already has Paz Vizsla as her second in command it seems, the Vizsla family being one of great renown amongst Mandalorian people.

The Mandalorian Season 3

The Kryze family would be another influential name to add to her resume of puppets she could influence to her own ends, though what these ends may be is anyones guess. Any question of her combat skill was put to rest as of episode 5 when she threw her forging hammer into a pirates face, though it seems unlikely she would challenge Din Djarin herself but rather use either Bo-Katan or Paz Vizsla as proxies. Speaking of Paz…

PAZ VIZSLA – THE WARRIOR?

As stated above, Clan Vizsla is known throughout all Mandalorian culture as being previous rulers, generals and warriors. Most notably however, one of their ancestors was the first ever (and only known) Mandalorian to become a part of the Jedi order and is credited as being the creator of The Darksaber. It is no wonder Paz was so eager to win the saber from Mando back in The Book of Boba Fett.

The Mandalorian Season 3

While being portrayed as the physical powerhouse of the Mandalorian covert he is shown great respect by his fellow members, his speech being the deciding factor on whether they would fight the pirates on Nevarro. He clearly has a talent for leadership and the combat skills to back it up, should he make a stake for the rule of Mandalore there would surely be many who back his claim. If Paz were to instigate some infighting amongst their ranks I doubt audiences would be surprised as he has been Mando’s rival from the very first season, a restoration to the old ways would most certainly be his driving goal were he to take leadership of the united clans.

MOFF GIDEON RETURNS

This may be a bit of an out there theory however it may hold some merit and would explain why Moff Gideon is the main villain of the series. Little is known of Gideon’s history other than that he was an officer at the time of the Great Purge of Mandalore, slaughtering millions of their kind in the event. It was during this time he somehow through events unknown came into possession of The Darksaber to which he became very well versed in using. By the start of The Mandalorian Season 3 Gideon is in the custody of the New Republic however as shown at the end of episode 5 he has been sprung from captivity seemingly by a sect of Mandalorians.

While this may be a set up by Gideon to paint a vengeful target on his Mandalorian enemy, putting Republic pressure on the now public covert on Nevarro, there is another possible explanation.

The Mandalorian Season 3

After the rise of The Empire, a group of Mandalorians allied themselves with their new Galactic overlords, becoming the Imperial Super Commandos. These Mandalorians wore the signature white and red colours of The Empire and sought to wipe out any opposing Mandalorian threat. It is possible these Super Commandos (or what’s left of them) are the ones who rescued Gideon which would explain the trace of Beskar alloy found in the wreckage of the carrier ship. If this were true it could mean they are simply loyal to an officer of a ruined Empire, but it could also be mean something else entirely…

MOFF GIDEON – A SECRET MANDALORIAN?

Could Moff Gideon in fact be a former citizen of Mandalore turned traitor for The Empire? It would explain his distaste for any and all things Mandalorian as well as his affinity with The Darksaber, the trophy of his decimated former people. His recent possession of the saber could also signify a genuine claim to the throne which the Super Commandos may recognise, as they once recognised Maul to be their leader despite being an outsider and a force user.

The Mandalorian Season 3

This particular sect of Mandalorians tie very much to the idea that ‘only the strongest shall rule’, could Moff Gideon lead these soldiers against Din Djarin’s in an attempt to recapture The Darksaber and bring the rest of the Mandalorians under his banner of strength? With an army of Mandalorians at his back he could would present a significant threat to the newfound peace established by the New Republic.

FINAL THOUGHTS

While it is highly likely many of our questions will be answered by the end of The Mandalorian Season 3 it is exciting to wonder the many possibilities the show may go down leading up to its season finale and carrying over into its fourth season. The show may take a page out of the Game of Thrones guide to political intrigue and have our respective Mandalorian clans go head to head for the rule of Mandalore with Din Djarin and Grogu stuck in the middle.

From what we’ve gathered here it seems each one of these characters will have a part to play in the fate of the Mandalorian people and The Darksaber. If it can only be won in combat then we are sure to see some Mandalorian heads roll in the fight for unlimited power.
