Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse releases it's first official trailer featuring fan favourite Miles Morales swinging back into action.

Miles Morales returns in his second animated movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse, seemingly looking to cause major havoc across the Marvel multiverse. Since Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse released in cinemas back in 2018, fans of the wall crawler have been anticipating its upcoming sequel, theorising what comes next in the story of Miles Morales. For those of you even wondering why we’re talking about a guy named Miles and not Peter Parker, we’ll fill you in. Watch the new trailer below!

WHO IS MILES MORALES?

Those of you who aren’t aware of Miles Morales, stop reading this and go watch the first Spider-verse movie, honestly you won’t regret it! But as a basic reminder and rundown of the character, Miles is a teenager that was bitten by a similar radioactive spider to Peter Parker’s and in this world, Spider-Man (Peter Parker) tragically dies fighting The Kingpin. Hence Miles takes up the mantle of his world’s Spider-Man.

The original movie shows Miles learning to control his new powers from an alternate universe version of Peter Parker as well as Spider-Woman (Gwen Stacey), eventually learning he has additional powers that the other alternate Spider heroes do not, such as invisibility and electrical shocks. Miles eventually defeats the Kingpin and closes the portal to the multiverse, sending his new Spider friends back where they belong, leaving Miles as the one true Spider-Man. At least thats where the first film left us at, but what will happen next?

THE MULTIVERSE RETURNS

The new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse shows Gwen Stacey open up a new portal to retrieve Miles and introduce him to the new multiverse it seems she has discovered. What exactly this place is is hard to tell from the little information we have but it appears to be some kind of multiverse limbo that acts as a hub for Spider-Men all across the multiverse. If we were to pick apart each frame of the trailer we’d be able to identify over a dozen different Spider-Men that have appeared in various forms of media. Some honourable mentions are PS4’s Spider-Man, Scarlet Spider and Spider-Man Unlimited.

While this initially looks like Miles’s dream come true, the trailer soon takes a turn as it doesn’t really show Miles fighting your standard Spidey villains, but in fact other Spider-Men. While there are many ideas floating about the web (pun intended) as to what could possibly lead to such a catastrophic conflict, what the trailer does make clear is who appears to be the big bad of the movie…

SPIDER-MAN 2099 IS THE VILLAIN?

As stated, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse does not hold back on shoving in as many comic book Spider-Man references as it can, however one in particular seems to be taking centre stage as the movies main villain. This being Miguel O’hara, Spider-Man 2099. In the comics Miguel is a hero from the future who becomes Spider-Man after being exposed to dangerous drugs intended to kill him. However they instead granted him spider like abilities similar to that of Peter Parker albeit a few minor differences. Miguel is often portrayed as a more quick tempered and rogue-like hero similar to many other Spider-Man characters that were conceived during the edgy 80/90’s era of comics.

You would think this Spider-Man would ally himself with Miles rather than fight against him but the trailer most definitely wants to convince us that this guy is the main villain. Though there could potentially more at play than we realise, perhaps mind control from another Spidey villain? It could be interesting to see a story about a corrupted Spider-Man with a master plan but until more details are released this is all speculation at this point. A different version of Spider-Woman also makes an appearance in the trailer who could be working with Spider-Man 2099 as his right hand woman, she does have a cool bike though.

FINAL THOUGHTS

On a side note the animation style for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse looks just as impressive as the first movie, looking as vibrant as ever. The constant contrast of colours and and shapes make the whole universe feel so alive and make us as the audience want to explore the multiverse right alongside Miles. In a way it almost gives the impression of a comic book come to life, which is a theme the first film hit on quite a lot once Miles acquired his powers. His internal monologue began with word and impact balloons beginning to pop up all over the place and it fight scenes. This still from the trailer below captures this perfectly and for fans of the comics this is likely a peep into their own imagination bringing the characters on the page to life. Yes It will certainly be difficult to live up to the amazing reception of the first film though if any Spider-Man movie can do it, its this one.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse releases in cinemas on June 2nd 2023.
