John Luther is back, what can we deduce from the trailer?

So here is our breakdown of the new Luther: The Fallen Sun trailer released by Netflix, let’s look at what we know from the synopsis of this long awaited movie.

At the end of season 5 Luther was arrested by his boss, DSU Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley), at the beginning of this movie he is in the nick, but it doesn’t take long for him to break out as we see there is a full scale riot.

Yep, that’s a bloke on fire. We get the picture that there’s a bigger budget this time as this riot is completely mental. Luther then gets broken out of a transport – someone cuts his handcuffs with bolt cutters. An ally on the outside, or the inside?

Then one of the new detective characters, Odette Raine (played by Cynthia Erivo) informs Schenk that Luther is out, his droll reply ‘Of course he is’ perfectly sums up his relationship with Luther over the past few seasons.

Then we get the money shot;

The Coat is Back!

Yes, his grey wool overcoat is back. It’s as iconic as Columbo’s raincoat, and we know when he’s in the coat, Luther is in the zone. And Luther’s zone is taking down bad guys, generally serial killing maniacs. Andy Serkis is this movies big bad psycho.

Andy Serkis has Mad Hair

It’s not a wig, he apparently went to great lengths to get his barnet looking so creepy. his character, David Robey, is ‘a sadistic serial killer who is terrorising London’. But that hair… In an interview with Total Film Serkis said ‘I don’t think I’ve come across anything quite as dark for a long time.’. Well he has and spent hours straightening it into what we see here, qaccording to one interview he’s a tad pissed off that everyone is assuming it’s a wig.

The direction of his villainy seems to be down to being super-rich and able to dig into peoples private lives to torment and then murder them. This could be him below menacing someone, or possibly a deranged henchperson?

Then we get some tense scenes in London of John doing his job the only way he knows, by chucking the rulebook out the window. There is some police speak about his ignoring them and tactical teams scream around London. They are usually destined to either go to the wrong place, at the wrong time or just bugger up what they’re meant to do. One shot has Luther under a pile of them like a rugby scrum as he screams at them that they’ve got the wrong geezer. So far, so Luther. But all of a sudden we’re in a snowy landscape that certainly aint Shoreditch…

John is hanging off a landrover driving across an arctic landscape. So a fresh and crispy cold location for his pursuit of the villain. Or it’s a weird dream sequence.

Then he’s back chasing him through the London Underground, phew. It all looks wonderfully on point for a continuation of the Luther mythology.

Luther, Sherlock meets Columbo

Writer Neil Cross has compared Luther to an amalgam of Sherlock and Columbo, and you can see where he is coming from. Cross excels at writing truly twisted villains, and David Robey seems set to be a highly memorable one, especially when played by someone of Andy Serkis’ standing.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is written by Neil Cross (writer of all the Luther series) and directed by Jamie Payne. It’s on Netflix  on 10 March in the UK.
