Production of Furiosa is in full swing in Australia, here are some of the first pictures leaked from the set

Back to the world of Mad Max in Furiosa

Writer and director George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road was a spectacular success back in 2015, as well as a welcome return to the world of Mad Max, it was also one of the best action films ever, certainly the best of the 21st Century so far. The relentless action and jaw dropping practical stunt work provided a thrill ride like no other. Mad Max Furiosa is set to continue that success, except this isn’t a Mad Max movie, it’s all Furiosa’s.

It was also pure cinema, a story told and characters defined with minimal dialogue allowed the images to speak from themselves. George Miller is an inspired film maker and his black and white (or ‘Black and Chrome’) version proved it a masterpiece of the genre.

George Miller, action auteur

Miller delivered Fury Road to great critical and public acclaim against the odds. Set to film in Nabia it was hastily relocated to Nabia after floods on Oz lead to lush meadows springing up where the desert should have been. Filming was famously fractious between the leads, Tom Hardy seemed to wind Charlize Theron up continuously – this probably paid off as the tension was right there on screen. Hardy has since admitted that he was a bit of a dick (our words, not his).

Miller had a vision for the movie that paid off, many of the team were scratching their heads as he ploughed through, aided mainly by a complete set of pre-viz drawings rather than the script. However everyone pulled in the same direction and every second of their hard work was worth it. This time round the cinematographer is Simon Dugga, the New Zealand born cinematographer is known for The Great Gatsby, 300: Rise of an Empire and I Robot. Expectations are high!

Miller has stressed that this will be a different movie to Fury Road that follows Furiosa over several years, he said “You’re definitely looking to not repeat what you’ve just done and you are looking to make it, if you like, uniquely familiar. It’s got to be its own thing.”

Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa

The follow up to Fury Road is a spin-off and prequel, Furiosa focuses on the origin story of Imperator Furiosa. Played brilliantly in Fury Road by Charlize Theron, the younger version of that character is portrayed here by Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, The Northman and Last Night in Soho). Details of the plot are sparse, the official synopsis is this:

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

Much of the plot of Fury Road centred around Furiosas attempt to get back to the ‘green place’ that she was snatched from by Immorten Joe. a few pics have been leaked from the set of Taylor-Joy in character as Furiosa whilst filming:

Chris Hemsworth as Dementus

The great ‘Biker Horde’ are the antagonists, led by Dementus – and that character is being played by Chris Hemsworth, again seen in some leaked images below:

Production on Fury Road was exhausting, and Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth are no strangers to action and discomfort. Taylor-Joy in particular seemed to revel in being almost constantly cold and wet whilst filming Robert Eggers The Northman, while still deliverng a barnstorming performance.

Practical effects and stunts in Mad Max

Fury Road boasted the nigh on perfect balance between practical stunts, VFX and CGI. Everything had weight and was bound by the laws of physics – The video below by Wired has a good look into the partnership between the whole creative team that made it all possible.
