HBO's The Last of Us drops its first official trailer since the small teaser we saw earlier this year, could it become the new best post-apocalyptic show on TV?

HBO’s The Last of Us has finally dropped its first official trailer and a release date has been confirmed for January 15th 2023. This show has mostly flown under the radar since it’s announcement yet has gained attention from fans of the original game series looking to see their favourite characters come to life on the small screen. From the look of this trailer the network has gone all out to see this come to fruition. Check out the new trailer below!

THE NEXT BEST POST-APOCALYPTIC SHOW ON TV?

Video game adaptations very rarely go over well with fans, whether that be due to the creator’s deviance from the source material or simply lacking the creative punch to translate it to a compelling live action story. HBO’s The Last of Us has had the full support and creative input from its original gaming team who are hoping to create a faithful adaptation that is worthy of the 2013 video game’s success.

With the biggest post-apocalyptic series on TV (AMC’s The Walking Dead) finally come to an end and with an unspecified amount of time before it’s spin-offs release, The Last of Us has the opportunity to become a worthy successor. The two shows would certainly draw a lot of parallels. Both are set in a world plagued by infected/zombie like creatures, both focus around a male protagonist on a mission to survive as well as the biggest commonality being that both stories prioritise the living as a bigger threat than the dead/infected.

They are about showing the dark side of humanity, the potential for evil when thrust into a fight for survival. The first The Last of Us game told this story well, though we won’t get a fell of how faithful the show will be to its source material until the show drops early next year. We debated whether it will live up to the fan hype here.

The Last of Us premieres on HBO January 15th 2023.
