Some details on the mystery at the heart of the new Knives Out movie

A new mystery

Rian Johnson delivered a classic whodunit with Knives Out back in 2019. The film was a master class in the Agatha Christie style of mystery, giving the audience just enough to start to piece things together whilst throwing in plot twists that confound expectations. Something that the actual Agatha Christie adaptations recently directed and starring Kenneth Branagh singularly failed to do. Both Death on the Nile and Murder on the Orient Express felt plodding by-the-numbers versions that added nothing to the genre. Glass Onion a Knives Out Mystery is the sequel coming out later this year.

Daniel Craig playing the master detective Benoit Blanc is one compelling reason the films felt so fresh. On paper he is just another eccentric investigator in the mould of Hercule Poirot, but on screen Craig makes him a fully rounded character. Johnson added a healthy dose of social commentary to the story, Blanc cuts through the entitled characters lives to reveal the insecure and greedy souls that dwell beneath.

Netflix won the bidding war to make further instalments in what looks like a healthy new franchise. The second film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, will be on the streaming platform on 23rd December 2022. The slightly opaque title occurred to Johnson as a way of alluding to the search for an ‘overwrought metaphor’ that Blanc can ‘beat to death’

“This is all in plain sight from the very start. So, the idea of glass came to me, something that’s clear. I’ll be very honest. I literally got out my iPhone and searched my music library with the word ‘glass.’ There’s got to be some good glass songs. I was like, “Oh, is it a glass fortress? Is it a glass castle? Is it a glass man?” The first thing that came up, because I’m a huge Beatles fan, is ‘Glass Onion.’”

This was the title reveal from Netflix

The official synopsis:

“A tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites some of his nearest and dearest for a getaway on his private Greek island, it soon becomes clear that all is not perfect in paradise. And when someone turns up dead, well, who better than Blanc to peel back the layers of intrigue?”

Daniel Craig returns

In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Craig explains why he jumped at the chance of another outing as the detective.

“I’ve spent the past 15 years of my life trying to do that in a franchise, so I’m not afraid of it. If you’ve got the right people in the room and the right talent, then you can do it. Rian is a genius writer and doesn’t want to repeat. Neither do we want to let people down; we want audiences to enjoy the world that we created in the first one and believe in this one.”

The Cast

Knives out featured a stunning ensemble cast, the sequel has a cast that promises that same chemistry. Daniel Craig turns as Benoit Blanc, Edward Norton plays Miles Bron, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline with Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista
