Deadpool 3 has finally been announced and will feature Hugh Jackman return in his iconic role of Wolverine.

Deadpool 3 has officially been confirmed by the man himself Ryan Reynolds via his social media. Known for his short comedic sketches, this one took fans by surprise as he announced not only that a third film was underway, but that Wolverine would also make an appearance. Over the years Ryan Reynolds and Wolverine star Hugh Jackman have often teased over doing a movie together with these characters. Much like their real world counterparts, they have a rather comical friendship. You can watch the full sketch below!

Reynolds posted on his Twitter claiming it was “Hard keeping my mouth sewn shut about this one”. It was thought Hugh Jackman retired from the role of Wolverine after the 2017 film Logan saw his character meet a somewhat bittersweet end. A fitting send off for Jackman’s 17 year run playing the clawed mutant. Fans have been keen to see Reynolds and Jackman unite on screen for some time though it seemed different cinematic universes and real world character rights often stood in their way.

Wolverine and Deadpool have crossed paths many times in different Marvel comics. Often times as allies, sometimes as enemies, though always as rivals. Deadpool’s lack of a serious bone in his body combined with his habit of annoying anyone he comes across has caused him to butt heads with Wolverine on more than one occasion. Perhaps when the two characters first meet in Deadpool 3 we will see them them initially as enemies though in classic superhero fashion they may team up to face a greater enemy by the end of the film.

DEADPOOL 3 – WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?

The last we left our lovable anti-hero, Deadpool had sacrificed himself in order to save the young Russell from taking a villainous path. This in turn inspiring Cable to use his time travelling device to save Deadpool from death. This meant Cable was now trapped in the present unable to return to his family in the future. However during the post credit scene his time travelling device was fixed by Negasonic Teenage Warhead and her girlfriend Yukio. Deadpool then used this device to go back in time and save his girlfriend Vanessa and X-Force member Peter.

With this in mind its possible we’ll see Vanessa (played by Morena Baccarin) return in some capacity alongside the previously mentioned members of the X-Men (as well as Colossus). Potentially Cable too however there would be little reason for him to stay considering his time travelling device has been repaired. The other X-Men from the original franchise made a minor cameo in Deadpool 2 so it may be possible for them to also make an appearance. However it is more likely the movie will focus primarily on Jackman’s Wolverine. Which version of Wolverine is up for debate, though it is likely to be a much younger version than the one featured in Logan.

Time travel is always a troubled and tricky topic for filmmakers to delve into as eagle eyed fans often will pick holes in the film’s logic when it comes to the subject. The writers could have Deadpool’s abuse of the time travel device become the explanation as to how Wolverine ends up encountering his friendly rival. Though as stated this could open themselves up to criticism if not explained well enough. It is more likely Wolverine will show up as a member of the already existing X-Men featured in Deadpool’s universe which as a recent update may show, is being merged with the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). A big issue we may potentially encounter is how Deadpool’s R rating will fit into the MCU. The lighter tone has already threatened other Marvel characters individuality.

At the moment there are few details aside from what is shown above however leading up to the film’s release next year we will be sure to cover any more that surface. Deadpool 3 is due to release on the 6th September 2024.
