Daredevil: Born Again confirmed as a reboot rather than a continuation of the Netflix series. Will the change in tone take the character too far from his established representation?

There were fears that Disney’s new Daredevil: Born Again series would take the character in a different direction, one that would realign the tone with the same as that of Marvel’s other band of shows. This would potentially do away with the mature storytelling and the relatable cast of characters whose development we have come to expect and enjoy. In place we could have a show devoid of all individuality, slapped with the same Marvel coating of humour and colourful CGI boss fights.

Unfortunately it seems these fears have been well founded as Daredevil actor Charlie Cox claims that Daredevil: Born Again will not be a continuation from the Netflix show and instead be a full reboot. In a recent interview Cox said:

“I think the show will be slightly tonally different — I don’t know how yet — I haven’t read anything yet. We’re doing 18 episodes, that tells me that the structure and the way we’re going to tell our story will be slightly different.”

BORN AGAIN – THE WRONG DIRECTION?

With an already great established cast of characters and character progression at their disposal it seems a wasted opportunity by Disney to bring these characters into the overarching fold of the MCU. Bringing with it the fanbase of the original Netflix show that at the time wanted nothing more than to see The Man Without Fear make his debut on the big screen.

If the Netflix Marvel shows have proven anything its that people yearn for more than just a shared universe of their favourite superheroes. They yearn for story, for emotion and for people they can follow and relate to, root for and criticise. If the latest Marvel products speak for themselves in that the only thing they care about is quantity over quality. They are packing in so many characters that they forget every single character is different, with a huge tonal difference in Daredevil being a prime example.

That’s not to say that crossovers cannot happen with certain characters and that they aren’t interesting, yet it has to be done considerate of the characters and the world they live in, it must be believable. If every character in the MCU has the same awkward humour and one liner delivery it will be hard to take each of them seriously when the action does start to happen.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Of course this is all speculation at this point and it’s possible Disney+ will do the character of Daredevil justice. Yet if we are to judge in advance, looking at the current state of Marvel, it could be safe to say that the reputation of Daredevil is very much at risk. After Ben Affleck’s take on the character back in 2003 and the criticism the film received, fans of the character thought Daredevil’s live action legacy had been all but destroyed. Enter Marvel’s Netflix series and it redeemed the character in a way that was totally unexpected and tonally unique from Marvel’s current products at the time. Let’s hope Disney+ adds to this enduring legacy or we once again witness the fall of a once great Marvel character.
