Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is the latest DC animated movie to be released direct to Blue-ray featuring an occult powered Dark Knight.

Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is DC’s newest animated movie to be released featuring the Dark Knight as an occult styled investigator in the 1920’s. Based off the comic book series of the same name, the movie takes much inspiration from H.P. Lovecraft and his gothic science fiction mythos, with many of Batman’s allies and foes having a Lovecraftian twist to their design. Even the title of the film is a nod to Lovecraft’s own short story ‘The Doom That Came to Sarnath’. While current details are vague the trailer teases who or what the World’s Greatest Detective might be up against this time around. Watch it here below!

A NEW BATMAN FOR AN OLD TIME

Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is set to take place in 1920’s Gotham City, an age long before a Batcomputer and a plethora of bat-themed gadgets were available. Meaning our hero will be relying much more on his wits and intelligence than many previous iterations of the character, him having a much more ‘back to basics’ approach to detective work in this story. While it seems no Robins will be present in this story, his trusty butler Alfred Pennyworth and what looks to be Lucius Fox will be aiding Batman in his new case.

A LEAGUE OF SHADOWS, OR MAGIC?

While difficult to make out it appears the main antagonists of the film will be an occult themed League of Assassins headed by Talia al Ghul, Batman’s known love interest in the mainstream comics and daughter of The Demon’s Head. While she is often portrayed as a villainous femme fatale doing her evil father’s bidding, she can often be seen butting heads with him over the leadership of the League (as well as her complicated relationship with The Dark Knight). Whatever role she plays in the upcoming movie it will most certainly spell trouble for Batman. The green smoke like magic we see in the trailer could well be this universes take on the Lazarus pit, the substance that brings people back from the dead. In a story that contains demons, zombies and other bizarre monsters this may not be such a huge stretch.

KILLER CROC, ETRIGAN THE DEMON AND MORE…

In a story that focuses around magic and monsters, it would be a crime not to include some of DC Comics most well known occult characters. The trailer reveals Etrigan The Demon as well as possibly a female Swamp Thing will show up at some point in the narrative though other staples of DC’s magic community such as John Constantine have not yet been announced to appear. In keeping with the Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham comic series, each of Batman’s rogues that feature in the film will have some kind of Lovecraftian twist on their persona. We get a small glimpse of Killer Croc who certainly looks more creature than man, his reptilian aquatic nature is a perfect model for that style of horror to be applied.

RELEASE DATE & LEGACY

Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is set to release March 28th 2023 and will be the first Batman animated film since the passing of legendary Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy back in November 2022. While many will likely never see anyone else as the voice The Dark Knight, here’s hoping the film pays some kind of homage or tribute to the actor considering his many many years under the cape and cowl. Regardless the film will hopefully be a fresh take on Batman and contribute to the character’s overarching legacy as one of comics all time greats.
