The powerful anti-war novel gets a stunning German made adaptation

An anti-war classic

Netflix have released a trailer for the new adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 classic novel All Quiet on the Western Front. made by the German filmmaker Edward Berger, who wrote the script along with Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell. The film premieres at the Toronto Film Festival and will have a short theatrical release, it will hit streaming on 18th October 2022.

The novel is an all time anti-war classic that descibes the experience of a young man, Felix Kammerer (played by Paul Bäumer), joining the German army. It charts his descent from wide eyed patriot to a shattered husk, smashed down by the horrors of trench warfare. Remarque experienced this first hand and the novel reads incredibly powerfully.

Berger is quoted on the Netflix website as saying,

“There’s a feeling that will be with us for our whole life: the feeling of the legacy of two wars, our view of war is dominated by sorrow and shame, by devastation and guilt. Nothing positive remains, not the tiniest spark of heroism. I found making our history, our background and our attitude to war the driving force behind a film a great challenge. And I thought that this very specific German perspective may well be of interest to people in other countries too. Especially at the moment.”

The trailer looks as if it hasn’t shirked from any of the brutality and horror at the heart of All Quiet on the Western Front, indeed Germany have entered it for its official Oscar contender. The film also features Daniel Brühl, Albrecht Schuch, Moritz Klaus, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovic, Adrian Grünewald, Devid Striesow, Andreas Döhler, Sebastian Hülk, Alexander Schuster, Luc Feit, Michael Wittenborn, Michael Stange, André Marcon, Tobias Langhoff, and Anton von Lucke.
